Coding With a Six-week-old

On the 14th of October, my husband and I welcomed our wee man into the world. It’s been a real change to everything we do and used to do and it’s been tricky trying to mesh our old life with the new one. I thought I’d write some posts about some of those challenges and how we are trying to figure it out.

Both my hubby and I worked way too much. He already has an hour drive to work and another hour to get back so that also add’s to his workload. As a teacher, evenings and weekends can also be dedicated to marking and catching up with everything that he didn’t have time for during the week.

It wasn’t unusual for me to work most of the day and evening either as I didn’t have anything better to do. I like my job 98% of the time and I’d even go so far as to say I love it around 10% of the time, so that’s all groovy. Still, I worked a lot.

There’s not much the hubby can do about his workload but he does try to get home by six each evening, so that’s a start.

My work has changed a lot. Obviously I can’t work as much as I used to, also I have to play by the baby’s rules so I can only work when he lets me.

Evenings and weekends are my best bet to get things done as the hubby is at home and can take care of the wee monster for an hour or so.

There is zero chance of me getting uninterrupted work time, so I try to break my work into tiny steps of say 15 minutes, so I can progress slowly but steadily through the day as the baby allows. At the moment I can’t get a lot of coding work done, but at least I’m able to handle all of the WP-Ensure updates and even development.

One other thing that took me far too long to realize (sleep deprivation is a bitch), is that I can also have him on my desk in his sitter (strapped in and safe of course) and we’re working on getting used to the carrier so I can wear him. Once that’s accomplished then I hope to be more productive.

As the baby grows, naps should get longer and with a bit of luck, I’ll be able to squeeze more in while he’s napping. Until then, I’m just enjoying the journey 🙂
